Yakima Housing Authority (YHA) provides rental assistance to low-income families in the private rental market through the Housing Choice Voucher Program, commonly known as Section 8. The voucher is a subsidy that an individual or family can use to rent a unit from any landlord who meets the program requirements. Those who qualify will pay approximately 30% of their income for rent and utilities. YHA pays the difference between what you pay and the qualifying payment standard.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Foster Youth to Independence program aims to ease the transition of youth who are no longer eligible for foster care because of their age and may as a result become homeless.
Youth who were in foster care at some point between their 16th and 18th birthday are between the ages of 18-24have left foster care or will leave foster care within 90 days are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Yakima Housing Authority collaborates with Aging and Long-Term Support Administration’s Housing Team to make Housing Choice Vouchers available to DSHS clients. The NED program provides rental assistance to non-elderly households with disabilities to transition from nursing homes and other health care institutions into the community. These institutions could include intermediate care facilities and specialized institutions that care for people with developmental disabilities, or mental illness.
A family’s head of household, or sole member, is 18-61 years of age at lease signing. The qualifying person has a disability Low-income currently in an institutional setting.

The Mainstream Voucher Program provides rental assistance to very low-income, disabled households. The Yakima Housing Authority partners with Aging and Long-Term Support Administrations Housing Team to make Housing Choice Vouchers available to DSHS clients but is not a requirement.
A family’s head of household, or sole member, is 18-61 years of age at lease signing AND Homeless OR Transitioning out of institutional facility or other segregated setting OR at serious risk of institutionalization
YHA has a limited number of vouchers to distribute, and the waiting list is currently closed.
The Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program is a joint effort between the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Veteran’s Administration. HUD allocates Housing Choice Vouchers that allow homeless veterans and their families to live in market-rate rental units while the VA provides case management services. A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord on behalf of the participating Veteran. The Veteran then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program.
Veterans who are interested in the HUD-Vash program should first contact their local Veterans Affairs Center a clinician will complete the referral paperwork and send it the HUD-Vash Admission Team for review the Admission team will asses the Veterans eligibility and need for on going case management If a veteran is admitted to the program a case manager will be assigned to begin working with the veteran on a treatment plan and connection to services the veteran will also be assisted in obtaining a section 8 housing voucher and in location-appropriate housing there is no time limit for being in the HUD cash program however veterans who refuse VA vase management may lose their section 8 voucher from HUD.
The Stability Voucher initiative makes Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) assistance available to YHA in partnership with Yakima Neighborhood Health Services to assist households experiencing or at risk of homelessness, those fleeing or attempting to flee domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking, and veterans and families that include a veteran family member that meets one of the proceeding criteria.
